Balfour Beatty Presents: 7 Years of Lean: A Retrospective on the Penn Pavilion's Lean Journey
Hear from the PennFIRST team who built the $1.6B Penn Pavilion under an IPD contract using many Lean methodologies. Hear what worked, what they would do differently, and how they are transferring lessons from a mega-project to other projects - and how you can, too.
The team will discuss how they used colocation, intentional onboarding, weekly huddles starting in the design phase, A3 thinking, off-site manufacturing, and unique approaches to technology and scheduling to deliver a world-class healthcare facility and how they enable the team to pivot quickly amidst a global pandemic to deliver 120 beds to the health system for use in the COVID-19 response.
Balfour Beatty Speakers:
- Amanda Patton, Manager, Integrated Projects

Southland Industries Presents: Trade Partner Prefabrication - Breaking the Mold
We all know prefabrication leads to a safer and more efficient install, but how do we maximize prefab and who should lead the charge? Trade Partners should lead the push for prefabrication. Allowing Trade Partners to lead raises the bar on the level of prefabrication for projects. Moving work offsite also allows for larger, more complex projects even in geographic areas with labor shortages. This presentation will share the blueprint Southland is using to optimize the prefabrication process, both at our permanent network of fabrication facilities and when creating multi-trade fab shops near large job sites. Learn about the innovative approaches implemented that have helped create a Lean culture of continuous improvement and hear the lessons learned along the way.
