Respect for People
Respect in Lean
The Toyota Production System (what some call "Lean") requires "Respect for People" first and foremost. Respect for People takes many forms – diversity, equity in pay, equal opportunity, and mental health. Of these, mental health is the least talked about.
Mental Health & The Built Environment
With 53.2 suicides per 100,000 workers, construction has among the highest suicide rates of any industry. Deaths by suicide are five times higher than all other construction deaths combined, evidenced by 1,008 deaths from fatal work in 2020 compared to 5,242 by suicide in 2018. In addition, architects and engineers suffer a high rate of suicide as well with 23.2 suicides per 100,000 workers. The factors contributing to this include the high pressure environment of the job and the general lack of institutional support for mental health.Mental Health Resources
