An Alliance of Lean Learning: The Obama Presidential Center (Chicago CoP)
The Obama Presidential Center is a landmark project in Chicago, utilizing strategic partnerships for the design and construction phases. The unique nature of the concrete design required creative solutions for constructability and aesthetic verification with early contractor involvement.
On a project in which Last Planner System® is still in a learning curve, this GEMBA-style presentation will allow members of the design and construction teams to share lessons learned and describe how Lean tools were implemented to achieve the project goals.

- Junisa Brima, Lakeside Alliance
Junisa currently serves as Construction Executive and Deputy Operations Manager for the Chicago Business Unit of Turner Construction. In his role as Construction Executive, Junisa is the day-to-day team leader responsible for successful operational delivery of the Obama Presidential Center while ensuring that the manner in which we deliver serves the missions of the Obama Foundation and Lakeside Alliance. - Scott Atchison, Lakeside Alliance
In his 32 years with Turner, Scott has helped build notable healthcare, data center, commercial and higher education projects throughout Illinois and Indiana. Scott is currently working as Senior Project Superintendent as a part of the Lakeside Alliance, builder of the Obama Presidential Center. As Senior Project Superintendent, he supervises field construction, including a project’s organization, planning, and scheduling and is directly responsible for safety, scheduling, coordination, quality control, project turnover and provides daily field management of all subcontractors and construction activities. - Lance Hornaday, Concrete Collective
Director of Self-Perform at W.E. O’Neil Construction, Lance is a 30+ year veteran of the commercial construction industry. At W.E. O’Neil, Lance is the Project Executive overseeing W.E. O’Neil’s involvement in the structural concrete subcontract for the Obama Presidential Center project. He also served several years as Chairman of the Old Town Triangle Historic District. Lance holds a Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management from Michigan State University and an MBA from the University of Illinois Chicago. - Bob McGee, Concrete Collective
- Scott Schneider, Thorton Tomasetti
Scott is a co-leader of Thornton Tomasetti’s Structural Engineering Practice. He has extensive experience designing and managing complex building projects. Scott’s design flexibility is reflected in his portfolio, which consists of a diverse mix of government, cultural, office, residential, and hospitality work. Scott has a strong background in digital design and building information modeling. . - Geoff Dauksas, Thorton Tomasetti
Geoff is a Vice President and has been with Thornton Tomasetti since 2005. He has been involved in such notable projects such as Woodlawn Residential Commons – UChicago, the Obama Presidential Center, Simpson Querrey Biomedical Research Center, and the James Hospital and Solove Research Institute. Geoff has a background in structural analysis and design, project management, construction administration and production of structural drawings.

The event will be held at the Obama Presidential Site on South Stoney Island Avenue. Due to limited parking onsite, specific directions for site entry and easy parking will be provided after registration and prior to event date.
